# Overprint

Also called overprinting

The setting that prints one colour on top of another instead of knocking it out of the colour beneath. It is applied to black text so that no white halo appears around the letters when the plates are slightly out of register.

## In practice

Set wrongly, it makes elements vanish in print although the screen shows them: white text set to overprint does not print. Layout software can preview overprinting: use it before exporting the PDF, and look at the proof rather than your file.
