# Spot UV

Also called Spot varnish, selective varnish, raised UV

A varnish applied to part of a cover only (a title, an image) to make it shine or stand out against the rest. Often paired with matt lamination, which heightens the contrast.

## In practice

It is prepared like an extra colour: a separate layer or page, in vector form, marking exactly what is to be varnished. Hairlines and small type cope badly with the slight registration shift, so keep it for bold shapes. The file each printer expects varies, which is worth knowing before the cover is laid out.
