AFNIL

Also called French ISBN agency

The agency that assigns ISBNs to publishers based in France, including authors and associations who publish their own books. Assignment is free.

In practice

An association or author publishing for the first time must first register as a publisher: do it before the cover is laid out, not the week of the proof, since the ISBN appears on it. One ISBN per edition: the paperback and the hardback each need one, a straight reprint does not. Outside France, each country has its own agency.
