Colophon

Also called printer’s imprint

The statement, at the end of the book or on the back of the title page, that names the printer and the place and date of printing, often with a print number. Carefully made books add the typefaces and the paper.

In practice

In France the printer’s name and address and the legal deposit statement must appear in the book. Leave room for it in the layout and ask the printer for the exact text: they supply their name, address and often a print number. For a reprint the date and number change, so remember to update them.
